Atlantic Terminal Community Centre

An existing 7000 sq. ft. facility housing the Community and the Senior Center functions was constructed in 1972 as part of the Atlantic Terminal Housing Complex designed by James Stuart Polshek. The facility does not have a clearly announced entrance and faces its back to the Atlantic Avenue.

The entire center is being gut rehabilitated and designed to comply with present day codes.

A new entrance lobby/canopy facing Atlantic Avenue and a bold use of colored glazed walls and use of curtain wall along Atlantic Avenue provides for a new identity to the Center.  Interior spaces have been reconfigured and use of glazed walls at exterior and interior corridors provide transparency and thus security that NYC Housing Authority is introducing in all other centers.  A physical and visual relationship has been created with the exterior plaza space along Atlantic Avenue.  The use of clear and semi- transparent glass curtain wall will create a dramatic feeling from inside and outside during daytime and evenings.

An existing interior space has been opened with use of clerestory windows to act as the main spine for the entire center serving various functions and bringing natural light in the center.  The entire facility is centrally air-conditioned, and its design meets present day codes and ADA guidelines.
