South Beach Community Centre

In this New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) complex Community Center functions have been located partially below grade cellar level of the existing 1948 apartment buildings with a maze of plumbing and electrical lines running in the ceiling, extremely tight headroom, virtually no views to the outside and no clear identity for the center.

The new 5,500 sq. ft community center in this NYCHA apartment building creates ground-level access to the community center and provides a welcoming entrance to the complex. An upward-sloping ceiling and full height curtain wall pour light into the new multi-purpose room. Brightly glazed walls enhance the openness of the new space, and rear windows reinforce the connection to the existing building and outdoor. The striped brick facade breaks up the monotony of the housing complex creating a landmark in the streetscape. The front entrance plaza creates an identity as well community gathering space to invite the residents.
